Donate shares
Donating shares to charity has been a tax efficient way of giving for several years. There is no capital gains tax payable and you can claim income tax relief at the appropriate rate on the value of your shares.
Can I donate my shares to Operation Smile?
To qualify for the tax relief, the shares or securities must be:
- Listed or dealt on a recognised UK or foreign stock exchange;
- Units in authorised unit trusts;
- Shares in a UK open-ended investment company;
- Holdings in certain foreign collective investment schemes;
For more information on tax relief for gifts of shares to charity and what records you need to keep please see the HMRC guidance notes
When you donate shares to Operation Smile you’ll help change the lives of children with cleft conditions all over the world.
ShareGift
If you have a small amount of shares to donate, the cost of transferring or disposing of them can often outweigh their value. ShareGift is an independent, registered charity et up to collect unwanted shares and give the proceeds to UK charities like Operation Smile.
ShareGift specialises in accepting small holdings of shares. They collect these shares until there’s enough to sell and then donate the funds to UK charities based on suggestions made by share donors.
To date they’ve donated more than £20 million to more than 2,000 charities. You can help Operation Smile by donating your shares and suggesting Operation Smile as a charity beneficiary.
