The Brian Coghlan Memorial Fellowship

On Sunday April 27, 2003, dedicated Operation Smile volunteer, Mr Brian Coghlan, was killed in a tragic car crash. Mr Coghlan was one of the premier cleft lip and cleft palate surgeons in the U.K. and one of the strongest and most dedicated supporters of Operation Smile.

Brian was exceptionally dedicated to expanding our network of U.K. volunteers, creating fellowship and education opportunities in the U.K. for physicians in developing countries, and serving as a public advocate for disfigured children around the world.

Operation Smile U.K. is dedicated to continuing its humanitarian service to children in Brian's memory and with a commitment to upholding his standards of excellence. To this end, the Operation Smile U.K. Board of Trustees has created the Brian Coghlan Memorial Fellowship. The fellowship will be given on a biannual basis to an Operation Smile international foundation in need of funding for a specific and sustainable local initiative aimed at reaching more children in need.

The second recipient of the Brian Coghlan Memorial Fellowship will be Operation Smile South Africa, Operation Smile's newest international foundation. The fellowship will sponsor the 2-year salary of the foundation's new Executive Director, Natalie Miller, a past Operation Smile Project Coordinator and International Development Associate. With the addition of Ms. Miller to Operation Smile South Africa, there is no doubt that the foundation will be able to grow the necessary seeds of sustainability to reach more children in need.
