BBC 1 Blue Peter Charity of the Year - ‘Send a Smile Appeal’
Operation Smile launched a campaign targeting UK primary schools as part of becoming the 48th Blue Peter charity appeal partner. The Blue Peter “Send a Smile” Appeal invited school children across the UK to make simple surgical gown for our patients to wear during their operations. The response to the Appeal was phenomenal smashing Blue Peter’s target 5 times. Over 100,000 gowns were received, creating national awareness. Curry’s, PC World, Curry’s Digital and Access Self Storage acted as collection and distribution points nationwide and once all collated British Airways flew the gowns to our HQ’s in the US, where they are still being shipped to all our project countries. The Blue Peter team visited one of the sites in India to show patients wearing the viewers gowns.
Deputy Editor, Joe McCulloch commented ‘The campaign has been a huge success! The relationship between Operation Smile and Blue Peter has been one of mutual understanding and respect, and this has been reflected in the success of the appeal. The whole team have been incredibly engaged with the appeal at all stages; I have found them all very approachable, honest and available, and I would happily recommend a future partnership with them.’

As part of a cause related marketing initiative, Operation Smile worked with Huggies to develop a viral marketing campaign to engage consumers in a product launch of Super-Dry Nappies range. The competition moved to a TV campaign and the winner received the accolade of Huggies Super-Smiler and a year’s worth of nappies. Operation Smile too became the beneficiary of a sizable donation from the organisation. Paul Finch, Product Manager for Huggies and some of his staff joined Operation Smile in Madagascar to the impact of their donation; ‘Coming here myself, it is amazing to see the difference Operation Smile is making to the lives of children. It has been great to get involved with the work you are doing.’
